•Cotton cloth from Fukuoka: Kurume-gasuri
Kurume-gasuri is a traditional resist-dyed textile produced in Kurume city in Fukuoka prefecture and area around the former Kurume domain area. It is a high-quality fabric that has been woven with fibers dyed specifically to create patterns. The cloth supports easy breathing, coolness and conserves warmth in the winter.
Other information: The technique of Kurume-gasuri was designated to be an important intangible cultural asset nationally in 1956 and national traditional craft by the Minister of International Trade and Industry in 1976. Hence the technique is widely respected domestically. The cloth was first crafted by a 12 years old girl named Den Inoue in the late Edo period. When she repeatedly washing an indigo-dyed kimono, she recognized that decolorization caused white faded dots on the cloth. This is the start of Kasuri and its design. Furthermore, Kurume-gasuri was favored and worn daily by famous Japanese author Osamu Dazai. Recently, Kurumi-gasuri kimono is worn in everyday scenes.
